NEW TIME! NEW FORMAT!

For Kids ages 6 - 12
Blind Beginnings, in partnership with the Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired (PRCVI), is excited to introduce an exciting new format for our Kids Connect program starting in February 2025!

This program, now offered once a month during the lunch hour (12:00 PM–1:00 PM) over Zoom, is designed to help blind and low vision learners aged 6 to 12 build valuable social skills, connect with peers, and have fun—all in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

New Program Structure

We know that flexibility is key for kids and their busy schedules during the school day, so we’ve designed the program with a structured hour that allows participants to join for any portion they can. Here's what a typical session will look like:

12:00 – 12:05: Casual chatting as kids arrive

12:05 – 12:15: Introductions and Check-in Question

12:15 – 12:30: Activity 1

12:30 – 12:45: Activity 2

12:45 – 12:55: Activity 3

12:55 – 1:00: Check-out and Goodbyes

Kids Connect Program Goals

Our goal for Kids Connect is to create an opportunity for kids to practice social interaction skills, one of the Expanded Core Curriculum areas essential for blind and low vision learners. Through engaging activities, participants will:

  • Practice turn-taking, active listening, and sharing ideas

  • Build friendships and explore common interests with peers

  • Gain confidence in interacting with others

These experiences can support the goals outlined in students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), making the program a valuable resource for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVIs). Through the partnership with PRCVI, the outreach team (Adam and Jen) are available to assist TSVIs with IEP goal development and assessment.

Facilitated by Positive Role Models

The program is facilitated by Keisha Anderson, our Programs and Membership Coordinator, who is blind herself. Keisha brings personal experience, understanding, and warmth to each session, serving as an inspiring role model for children in the program. Jen Jesso, PRCVI’s Outreach Coordinator, also brings lived experience and will be available to support most sessions

Why Kids Connect?

For children who are blind or partially sighted, opportunities to practice social skills in a supportive peer environment can be transformative. Kids Connect provides a safe space where participants can learn, grow, and create lasting connections with others who share similar experiences.

Kids Connect sessions are open to blind and low vision learners aged 6 to 12 throughout BC, and new participants are always welcome! This virtual program allows us to support and provide Kids Connect to kids all over the province.
