Our Limitless Philosophy

Blind Beginnings encourages a “limitless” philosophy in all its programs and educational materials. This mindset was adapted from a similar “no limits” philosophy that resonated with Shawn Marsolais, our founder, when she met Daniel Kish, a blind Orientation & Mobility Specialist with expertise in echolocation and self-directed discovery.

“Everybody has limits,” he told her, “but when you have a disability often people decide your limits for you. And usually they’re wrong. People with disabilities should have the power to choose their limits for themselves.”

Shawn adapted that philosophy and made it one of Blind Beginnings’ main tenants when she founded the organization, making the motto, “limitless potential is all we see”.

Why Limitless is So important

Limitless is about educating the public about the abilities and potential of children and youth who are blind or partially sighted. The idea that the only limitations that exist for these BC youth are the ones that society places on them is crucial to understand in order to fully embrace equity and inclusion in all aspects.

On a smaller scale, with every activity that a youth is able to participate in that they were previously told they couldn’t do, in every new skill learned, that youth begins to build a sense of confidence and pride that will be carried with them into adulthood.

With every member of the public who sees children and youth that are doing things that they previously thought were not possible, the public perception of the capabilities of people who are blind or partially sighted also begins to shift. It’s about building confidence and spreading awareness, one person at a time.

Limitless potential is all we see.
