Halloween Night

It was a dark and stormy night, I was home alone because my parents needed to take my younger brother Timmy out for trick-or-treating. I knew I was too old for an activity like that, so I stayed behind. I grabbed my pack of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and sat on the couch to watch my favourite zombie horror movie, "The End is Nigh".

About half way through the movie, I decided to call my best friend Lisa to ask her how her night was going so far. When I reached out over to the nearby coffee table to pick up my cell phone, I heard something unusual. It sounded as if there were footsteps coming from the hall across from me. I assumed I was imagining it, so I picked up her phone and began to dial Lisa's phone number. Just as I was about to type in the "8" key, the last digit of Lisa's number, the screen suddenly went blank. I tapped the phone screen a couple of times, but that only led to the dead battery symbol showing up. I gave out a loud sigh, as I recalled how my dad had borrowed my phone charger as a temporary replacement for the one he lost.

I placed my phone down onto the couch and continued on with the movie. A few minutes passed by when I heard the footsteps once again, accompanied by the laugh of a little girl. That caught my attention, so I decided to see where the sounds were coming from. When I arrived at entrance the long dark hallway that lead to my parents' bedroom, I didn't see anything. I turned on the hallway light so I could get a better look at the area, but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Just as I was about to walk back to the family room, I heard the little girl's laughter again. I quickly spun around, but didn't see anyone there.I was starting to freak out, so I decided to give a call to my mother. Given that I couldn't use my cell phone, I quickly walked over to the landline phone that was mounted onto the kitchen wall. As I brought the phone to my ear, I discovered that the phone line was dead, as there was no dial tone.

My heart rate began to pick up as the reality of not being able to contact anyone sank in. I had considered walking over to my neighbour's house, but I knew that no one was home because of the Halloween party that was being held at a nearby Banquet Hall. I began to feel a slow shiver down my spine, which spread down to my legs. I had nowhere to go and couldn't get a hold of anyone.Whilst I was trying desperately to think of a solution, the phone began to ring. Hoping it was my mother, I raced to the phone and picked it up. But to my disappointment, what I heard wasn't my mother's voice. Instead, all I heard was a weird static noise. I was about to end the call, when I heard the words "Get out," whispered into the phone, followed by a child's laughter. I screamed at the top of my lungs, and dropped the phone. In my panic, and confused as to where I should go, I bumped into the walls a few times. Fear pulsed through me, and I couldn't think straight. I turned the corner that lead to my own room, and finally settled in there sitting on the floor with tears streaming down my face and onto my clothes. I shut my eyes and rested my head against the door.I waited for my heart to stop feeling as if it were about to burst out of my chest. After a few minutes, I began to feel a little calmer and slowly opened my eyes. Just as I thought I was safe, I saw that I was sitting on something written in red. I stood up and saw the phrase "GET OUT, OR ELSE...." written on my bedroom floor.

I was paralyzed with fear, trying to get my legs to move, but to no avail. I heard a bang from my closet that nearly made me jump out of my skin. The laughter was coming from inside the closet. I slowly crept towards the closet, my heart pounding fast, faster than it ever did before. A bead of sweat trickled down my back, and with a long exhale I opened the closet. I couldn't see anything except for the darkness. Then, I heard something. It was faint but I could hear someone calling out my name. "Mary, Mary." It got louder and louder. "Mary, Mary, Mary! Get up Honey! You're going to be late for school!"

It was only a dream?
